Vegan Dessert Recipes can always be prepared by substituting healthy equivalents. When I remember old favorite recipes or learn about a new one, I’m eager to try it out with a vegan twist! My family is surprised that dessert does not have to filled with sugar and white flour to taste great. I use agave to substitute for sugar because of its low glycemic effect as well as only needing to use half as much as the recipe recommends. Flour alternatives can be whole wheat, or rice or oat for gluten free recipes. Carob powder is a non-caffeinated substitute for chocolate, however I buy it about twice a year in the specialty stores because it is not stocked in my local grocery.

A plant-based diet should be void of all meat, dairy, and eggs. There are alternatives for each of these and much healthier for you. When I use a food recipe calling for eggs, I substitute 1/2 cup natural unsweetened applesauce for each cup required. Non-dairy milks can include almond, rice, oat, hemp or soy, depending on your dietary restrictions. Great vegan recipes can become the mother of invention by substitution!

Changing from table salt to sea salt is recommended due to table salt being more processed. Sea salt is produced through evaporation of ocean water or saltwater lakes so it contains more trace minerals and has more flavor and texture. However, it is still important to limit your sodium intake with moderation. Whether you are cooking vegetarian or vegan, healthy recipes are the goal.

As always, it is important to read food labels when shopping in the grocery or convenience store for healthy cooking. Remember that the largest quantity of ingredients are listed in order from largest to smallest. Even with that said, some manufactures use more than one type of sugar to give the impression that less sugar is used.
